What is a carbon credit?
A carbon credit is the financial term used for the reduction of one metric tonne of CO2 emissions.
- A unit earned by someone who has implemented a project according to international standards that generates a reduction, removal, storage or avoidance in greenhouse gas emissions than would otherwise have occurred (for example a wind -farm);
- Issued by an authority or a Board pursuant to those international standards (one credit is issued for every tonne of emissions of carbon dioxide (or carbon dioxide equivalent) that has been reduced, removed, stored or avoided); and
- Bought by someone either for offsetting purposes, in which case the credit is retired (i.e. taken out of circulation permanently) to offset their own emissions (where one tonne of carbon dioxide can be offset by one unit / credit) or for investment or Speculative purposes.
- One carbon credit is equal to one ton of carbon dioxide
The major greenhouse gases emitted by these industries are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and hydrofluorocarbons all of which increase the atmosphere’s ability to trap infrared energy and thus affect the climate. The concept of carbon credits came into existence as a result of an increasing awareness of the need for controlling emissions. Scientists believe that reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions is essential if we are to minimise our impact on the environment.
The CDM allows emission-reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. TheseCERs can be traded and sold, and used by industrialized countries to a meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol. The mechanism stimulates sustainable development and emission reductions, while giving industrialized countries some flexibility in how they meet their emission reduction limitation targets.
The CDM is the main source of income for the UNFCCC Adaptation Fund, which was established to finance adaptation projects and programmes in developing country Parties to the Kyoto Protocol that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The Adaptation Fund is financed by a 2% levy on CERs issued by the CDM.

Reasons Why Organic Food is Better for You & the Planet
Making the right choices at the grocery store for both you and your family can often be a daunting task. There are so many products to choose from that all seem to do the same thing: feed you.
Nevertheless, the vast majority of products at your grocery store are often associated with a number of different hidden costs. At Nature’s Path we believe in the power of organics and have compiled a list of reasons we believe organics will help you on your path to becoming happier and healthier.
1. Organics keep GMOs out of our food
Not only does the organic certification ensure there are no harmful chemicals on our food, it also guarantees that they are not GMOs. Among other things, GMOs are often engineered to be used in conjunction with a single harmful chemical, such as Round Up or Agent Orange. Therefore, shopping organic is taking a stance against the large chemical producing corporations that have polluted the world’s food and fields.
Take action TODAY to secure GMO labeling.
2. Organic farming maintains healthy soil
Just how your choices at the grocery store dictate your health, they also dictate the health of the earth. Non organic foods are sprayed with extremely toxic chemicals that kill everything other than the crop itself. This includes the living organisms that a plant needs to grow and make the soil nutrient rich. Once those organisms are killed off they are replaced with synthetic fertilizers made up from… you guessed it, more toxic chemicals.
3. Organics don’t inhibit the growth of super strains (explanation below!)
Nature always adapts. Spraying chemicals to kill bugs only makes them grow, adapt to overcome the horrible toxins we use to kill them. There will always be something that eats the plant, and it will continue to grow and adapt until we no longer have control over it. The toxins we use will eventually become ineffective and plants and pests will become much more harmful.
4. Organic farming supports pollinators
Herbicides and Pesticides do not differentiate between good and bad bugs, it simply kills them all. In order for there to be life on earth we need to maintain a certain level of biodiversity; this includes everything from the biggest mammals to the tiniest of insects. Organic farming practices healthy growing techniques that aim to maintain that necessary level of biodiversity.
5. Organics support a healthier farm lifestyle and a healthier community
Growing food organically does not harm the surrounding community in which it’s grown. Unlike non organic practices, organics keep toxins out of the air, out of the drinking water and out of the soil. Farmers aren’t exposed to herbicides and pesticides all day; and if food is bought at the market where it’s grown, it reduces transportation costs and emissions.
6. Organic foods are often more nutrient rich
Organic foods get their nutrients straight from healthy, rich, organic dirt. If the dirt is healthy then there should be no need for fertilizers. Non organic crops get their nutrients from synthetic fertilizers made from fossil fuels. Years of not replenishing the soil with organic matter forces farmers to add synthetic fertilizers. This leads to nutrient deficient crops grown from the same thing that fuels our cars. We’ll let you make up your own mind on this one.
7. Organics are typically not monocropped
Planting a single crop in a large area (AKA: monocropping) leaves that crop extremely vulnerable to being wiped out by a single disease or bug. Farmers are forced to spray chemicals that kill absolutely everything other than the crop itself. As a result, that crop is the laden with chemicals which humans should not be ingesting. Having lots of different plants attracts lots of different bugs, all of whom end up working in harmony to promote healthy plants and a healthy earth. (Read Lessons from the Irish Potato Famine.)
8. Organic foods are often more flavourful
Just how the meat of a stressed animal is not as tasty and tender as the meat of a relaxed animal (so we hear – we’re actually vegetarian!), the flavour of a stressed crop will not be as good as that of a crop grown with ease. A plant the needs to dig deeper to find the nutrients it needs is stressed and cannot put that energy towards the growth of its fruit.
9. Keeps harmful pesticides and herbicides out of our beautiful ocean
Everything ends up in the ocean. Whether the chemicals are leaching through the soil into aquifers below; being blown into nearby rivers and lakes; or simply running off into the ocean after the rain. The toxins sprayed on our food are made to kill, and will do just that no matter where they are.
10. Organics don’t cost taxpayers millions of dollars
Farming is in no way an easy job. The work is hard and the reward can be small. In order to keep the extremely expensive, large scale, non-organic farming practice running millions of taxpayer dollars need handed out in subsidies. In addition, the impacts of non-organic practices need to be dealt with… There’s a few more million in clean up, restoration, and public health. Millions (perhaps billions) of dollars of taxpayer money goes towards making a big mess, then doing a very questionable job cleaning it up. Red flag? We say yes.

You would think that when it comes to the human body, scientists know all there is to know. But they don’t. Pain is caused when something triggers a nerve to send a pain signal to your brain.
Which is why, for years, scientists have been perplexed about a common phenomenon… How does someone experiencing chronic pain feel “pain” when there is no obvious injury? No obvious trigger?
Researchers from Stanford University have answered that question.
It turns out that a part of your body called the “extracellular matrix” (ECM) controls the cross talk between your immune system and your nervous system. After months of pain, changes begin to occur in your neurobiology — especially in your body’s ECM.
This huge, recently discovered “hidden” network of “sponge-like,” fluid-filled tissues, surrounds your brain, heart, lungs and every joint in your body. It’s largely made of proteins, like collagen and elastin. Part of its job is to act like a shock absorber to keep tissues from rupturing, while your organs, muscles, and blood vessels constantly pump and squeeze throughout the day.
But it has other critical functions, including gene regulation, stem cell development, immune system modulation, and the regulation of the peripheral and central nervous system. Stanford researchers discovered that chronic pain can alter the health of your ECM. They found major changes in the ECM in the hippocampus, your brain’s center for memory — which includes the memory of pain.
But the scientists also showed that just as your ECM can be altered by chronic pain, it can also be restored to health. Their latest research paper concludes that ECM therapies could be used to treat the “structural factors supporting the broader pain experience.” One of the best ways to restore the health of your ECM and kill chronic pain is to boost the key nutrients that support this vital network — like vitamins C, D and K2.3,4
But one other important nutrient is so essential for your ECM, that a deficiency can cause it to seriously malfunction. I’m talking about collagen. This protein is the basic building block of your ECM — and the chances are, you’re not getting enough in your diet.
Just as your skin and bones use collagen as their building blocks, collagen molecules pack together to form matrix-like scaffolding that provides your ECM with strength and structure. You can get more collagen by eating wild-caught salmon, as well as eggs and avocados. But bone broth is where you’ll get the biggest collagen bang for your buck.
Soothe Away Your Pain with My Primal Chicken Bone Broth
Here’s my recipe.
Ingredients:
- 4 pounds chicken parts including bones, neck, feet and wings
- 3 carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped
- 3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
- 1 medium onion, quartered and peeled
- 6 garlic cloves
- 1 Tbsp. whole peppercorns
- 4 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
- 2 bay leaves
- 18-20 cups cold water
Directions:
- Place all ingredients in a 10-quart stock pot. Cover with water.
- Let sit for around 60 minutes. Bring the pot to a boil and then reduce to a simmer.
- Skim off any impurities that rise to the top. When nothing else rises to the top, add water to keep the level just above the bones.
- Simmer for 15 to 24 hours. Then turn up the heat just a bit for the final simmer-down. This will concentrate the nutrients. Let simmer for another hour or two.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Discard solids and strain remainder through a colander.
